"The result of both brushwork and pouring technique, Tobey's paintings fuse abstract expressionist and surrealist imagery, in which brilliant colors assert themselves with forceful yet lyrical intensity. The linear and color arrangements suggest a fluid movement, in which every subtle turn or twist translates into a personal narrative."

"Accident and improvisation in art seem random only if observed superficially. If the results are aesthetically understood the artist is able to develop, manipulate and construct art from its results. An instantaneous and profound response to accident and improvisation can only come about with a deep connection to one's creative imagination. With this connection the artist becomes an instrument fo creative construction. The artist is then able to achieve a powerful communication through images."

"The comparison between important elements of music and art such as balance, tone, rhythm, harmony and style describe an incomplete truth. The similarity between the two reside in the depth and scope of our own internal engagement with the aural and then the visual."
Winter Ballad, 2002
Mixed media on canvas, 40 x 30"Music makes use of the fourth dimension, 'time.' Time is the communicator and definer of music's existence. A visual image can be fully looked at instantly, but not necessarily seen. This is why music can have more immediate emotional impact on the listener, while art must be translated and personally recreated by the observer. Music, by its nature of gradual unfolding in time, forces the listener to follow its creation with the important necessity of memory."

Oil on canvas, 24 x 48"Tobey's paintings and sculptures are highly energetic abstractions which inforporate lines and shapes into an autonomous and rhythmical, but also clearly structured whole. The apparent spontaniety of compositional handling is the result of intensive labor and continual reworking."
