ABOUT THE ARTIST - DAVID TOBEY

         David Tobey started painting in his early childhood in the Larchmont New York studio of his father, the late noted historical painter and muralist Alton S. Tobey (1914-2005). He also had a serious interest in music, fostered perhaps in no small part by his mother Rosalyn Tobey, who was a distinguished concert pianist.

         In his teens, David Tobey studied art at The Art Students League in New York and violin at The Music Conservatory of Westchester. He subsequently gained admission to The Julliard School of Music and graduated there with a performance degree in 1975. He also holds a Master's degree in art from The College of New Rochelle, in the city where he lives. David Tobey enjoys a busy career as a violinist, teacher, painter and sculptor, is a founding and very active violinist member of the Westchester Philharmonic and other orchestras, and he performs with many New York City freelance musical groups, such as with the Radio City Music Hall Christmas Spectacular, in the orchestras of Broadway shows, and at celebrity wedding and other functions.

          His work as a visual artist is represented by Pleiades Gallery in Chelsea, New York, where he has had an average of at least two one-man & group exhibitions a year for the past five years; and in Westchester by Washington Square Gallery, Rye Brook, NY; The Katonch Museum Gift Shop, Katonah, NY; James in Bedford, NY & other galleries and retail venues.. In New York City he also participates regularly in group exhibitions of the Contemporary Artists' Guild at Broome Street Gallery in SoHo; and in Westchester county, NY he is a member of Arts Westchester in White Plains, The New Rochelle Council on The Arts (where he held the position of co-director for two years), and the Blue Door Artists' Association in Yonkers. He has had many other solo and group exhibitions in New York City, Connecticut and Westchester not-for-profit organizations' venues, many of them being benefits for the causes he supports.

          In 2004 David was informed in a letter from Joseph W. Polisi, President of The Juilliard School that he was selected as one of a diverse group of 100 outstanding alumni of the school for inclusion in a special publication commemorating the school's Centennial to be published in 2005-2006. He was also appointed to a selection board for artist members for The Westchester Arts Council that was convened in March of 2005. He was also Co-chairman of the New Rochelle Council on the Arts for three years 2004-2007, and in April of 2006 his painting Fallen Angels, 2001, depicting the fall of the twin towers, was accepted into the collection of the George Bush Presidential Library.

          His most recent solo shows in Westchester were in November '09, a benefit for the Westchester Philharmonic, and at a private home in New Rochelle March through September 2010. In March of that year he served as one of three jurors, together with internationall famous pop artist Charles Fazzino and College of New Rochelle galleries director Katrina Rhein, to judge entries for the New Rochelle Council on The Arts Utopioptix exhibition and awards competition at the Lumen Winter Gallery in the New Rochelle Public Library. Since then in 2011, he has had solo shows, has been in group exhibitions and had his work shown in New York City; and in Westchester in White Plains, New Rochelle, Rye, Rye Brook, Katonah, Fleetwood, Peekskill, Yonkers and Bronxville. In June 2013 he received the Music Conservatory of Westchester's Distinguished Alumni Award, followed by a two month exhibition of hs most recent "Abstract Imaginaries" paintings.          As a musician, David, who is a violinist with The Westchester Philharmonic is a well know musician in the New York City and New Jersey area. He has been affiliated with many orchestras such as American Symphony, American Composers Orchestra, Long Island Philharmonic, Little Orchestra Society of New York, Musica Sacra, Masterworks Work Chorus, New Jersey Symphony Orchestra, New Jersey Ballet Orchestra, New Jersey Opera, Brooklyn Philharmonic, Queens Symphony, Joffrey Ballet, Oglevak Ballet, and Bronx Art Ensemble.

         He has been involved with many Broadway shows including: Sugar Babies, Fiddler on the Roof, Peter Pan, Metro, Show Boat, Damn Yankees, Phantom of the Opera, Les Miserables, Jerome Robbins Broadway, Evita, Legs Diamond, Cabaret, Me and My Girl, Dream Girls, and Camelot. He can also be heard in various films and on television. He has recorded with the RCA label and with performers such as Liza Minelli.

          Married to fellow Westchester Philharmonic violinist Moira Tobey, Mr. Tobey is also father to Elizabeth and Andrew, a proud grandfather to Lucas, and owner of five dogs and five cats.

          David's art was on exhibit in a group show with the New Rochelle Council on the Arts "Tribute to Thea Eichler" at the New Rochelle Public Library that opened on March 11th, runing through March 28th; and in another group art exhibition that opened on March 13th: "Contemporary Rhythms", work by artist members of ArtsWestchester at Horizon in Fleetwood. In the Spring of 2012 he also have some of his work on display with The Blue Door Artists' Association "4th Juried Group Exhibition" 3/24 - 4/21 in Yonkers and in the Contemporary Artist Guild group show "Tangential Vision" at the office of the Manhattan Borough President in New York 4/3 - 4/27.

         His welded steel sculptures can be seen at the Washington Square Gallery in Rye Brook, NY; at James in Bedford Hills, NY and in the gift shop at the Katonah Museum.

         An exhibition of his most recent abstract work was in a solo show titled "Abstract Imaginaries 2012" at Pleiades Gallery in New York May 15th through June 9th.
