   David's painting "Westchester Philharmonic" is in a group show with United Hebrew of New Rochelle at their Lazarus Gallery, 391 Pelham Road. On April 7th they hosted an artist's reception to premier the new exhibit entitled "The Visual Symphony: A Musically Inspired Art Exhitibition".

   The exhibit features interpretations of music and movement through a variety of work including painting, sculpture, photography, ceramics, collage and jewelry. The exhibit is open to the public, and will run through September 16. To see more photos from the opening reception, click here.

2011
TOBEY SCULPTURES AT RYE TOWN PARK

Rye Town Park in Westchester County, NY held an exhibition of David's welded steel sculptures entitled "Seaside Steel" October 22 - November 19, 2011 at the south end of their pond.

A reception for the opening of the show was held on October 22nd, with more than 200 people in attendance, who enjoyed a few hours' strolling around the park's more than 20 acres of landscaped trails and lawns, seeing the sculptures, feeding the ducks in the pond, and enjoying the music of "The Pink and Green Café", the jazz quartet that performed at the event. A presentation by Tobey at the White Plains Library Museum Gallery on Tuesday, May 31 preceded the final faculty meeting for The Pelham Jewish Center Learning Center workshop "Smart Art: Using Art in the Classroom" facilitated by Dr. Elissa Kaplan, lead educator of PaRDeS Yaakov, the professional development program for teachers in METNY religious schools. Pictured above are Ana Turkienicz, Education Director (center bottom row), Rabbi David Schuck (far left on back row), David Tobey, (center backrow), Dr. Kaplan (far right back row) and the faculty of the Pelham Jewish Center.          David's opening on March 30th attracted more than 200 people, and everyone had a very enjoyable evening viewing the artwork and listening to David performing on violin with Kirk Enrenreich on keyboard. In case you missed the reception, the exhibition will run through June 15th, so try to see it at the gallery, on the second floor of the library at 100 Martine Avenue in White Plains. During the full run of the show, the Friends of the White Plains Library and The White Plains Library Foundation will each receive 20% of proceeds from all artwork sales.

         On Saturday evening April 9th David performed with Kirk Ehrenreich on piano at the White Plains Library Foundation's Sixth Annual Treasures Gala in the library Auditorium just adjacent to the Museum Gallery where his paintings and sculpture were exhibited through June 15th. The gala honored three dedicated community partners of the Library whose contributions benefited many people in White Plains and Westchester County. November 4 & 6, 2010 -- David's two receptions on 11/4 & 11/6 for his exhibition of paintings, sculptures and prints at Pleiades Gallery in New York, a benefit for The Juilliard School, were very well attended. Guests enjoyed musical entertainment by David himself on violin and performances by other professional musicians, some of whom were also Juilliard alumni. The show ran through November 27th.

A highlight of the exhibition was the first public display at an established art gallery of David's newest work in illustrated violins, shown in the two photos below. The one on the left is an illustrated violin on a stand, and the one on the right is the front from an old Juzek instrument that was irreparably damaged that David recycled as a work of art, displayed now in an enclosed shadow box. A few of David's recently created small welded sculptures were also new to his gallery collection and were displayed for the first time at this show.

June 13, 2010 -- More than 100 people attended Tobey's "Brunch & Browse" public reception at the home of Yvonne Wynter at 52 Nob Court, New Rochelle Sunday, June 13th from 1 to 5 p.m. The event marked the mid-point of the six month exhibition of David's work there that opened on February 28th. (see below).

In addition to more than two dozen original paintings and a dozen of David's welded steel sculptures in this show, a selection of both limited edition and smaller open edition giclée prints of many of his paintings created since 2003 were available both as limited and open edition prints.

Also, David's prints of The Westchester Philharmonic, that he created for the orchestra in 2009 were also available, now in open as well as in the original limited edition, with a major part of the proceeds from sales to go directly to the orchestra.

The exhibition was available for viewing through the end of September 2010, but anyone who was unable to see it then, can attend David's current solo show at The White Plains Museum Gallery in the White Plains Public Library at 100 Martine Avenue in that city that opened on March 30, 2011 and will be thee through June 15th, 2011. March 1 through June, 2010 -- More than two dozen of David's original paintings and a dozen of his welded steel sculptures have been on continuous display at the home of an art lover and collector of his work in New Rochelle, NY. Photos below are from the opening reception for Mrs, Wynter's friends at the show that was held February 28th.

December 1, 2009 -- David was selected by the New Rochelle Council on The Arts as one of three members of the adjudication panel for selection of winners of the "Utopioptix" competition of the NRCA, a month-long show entitled "Visions of the Future, Then and Now" -- a collection of fantasy and science fiction type work by artists from the tri-state area. On Tuesday March 2nd, the jury panel shown below selected the first prize winner of the competition, and a reception and awards presentation was held at the exhibition, in the Lumen Winter Gallery at the New Rochelle Public Library on Tuesday, March 6th.

DAVID'S RECENT WORK & BENEFIT EXHIBITION
FOR THE WESTCHESTER PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA

December 1, 2009 -- David's painting The Westchester Philharmonic was selected for the cover (left) of that month's issue of the orchestra's monthly newsletter, Overtones, along with an article (right) about his November '09 benefit exhibition in the newsletter. If you're interested in supporting the orchestra by purchasing a giclée of the painting, see the article (blue box, lower right) on page 5 of Overtones that you can read as a PDF in its entirety on this page on the Westchester Philharmonic's own web site; or contact the orchestra at 914-682-3707.

Gicleés of David's Westchester Philharmonic and of some of his other new paintings featuring musical subjects also were on display at the Phil's Winter Pops Concert starring Barbara Cook Sunday, December 20th at 3:00 p.m. at the Purchase College Performing Arts Center. These also are available for purchase, with all profits beyond the cost of their printing to benefit the orchestra.



November 13, 2009 --The opening party for David's November '09 solo show at BID Gallery 542, an art gallery established by the city of New Rochelle's Business Improvement District (see poster below) was a great success with more than 400 people visiting. In addition to the sale of more than a dozen of his paintings and giclées, everyone enjoyed live music by members of the Westchester Philharmonic String Ensemble and by keyboard artist Kirk Ehrenreich between sets. Toward the end of the evening, David and his wife Moira also performed on violin with Kirk accompanying them.

5/17/09 -- David, who is a founding member of the Westchester Philharmonic orchestra, was a member of their Spring Gala Committee, and recruited some of the most famous artists in Westchester County, NY to create artistic violins that were auctioned at the gala, held on May 17th at the Ritz Carlton hotel in White Plains. Overtones, the orchestra's newsletter of July 1, 2009 featured Tobey in an article on his career as a violinist and painter that can be accessed here.

David got five artists to contribute their works to be auctioned at the event, and a total of $27,050 was realized from the sale, all going to benefit the Westchester Philharmonic. Everyone attending the gala was also given a certificate guaranteeing 30% of any sale of David's late father's paintings from his collection would go directly to benefit the orchestra. Feb. 17 - Mar 14, 2009. Solo show at Pleiades Gallery, NYC -- At the reception on the 21st, David performed on violin along with Von Cello,the founder of the first cello-fronted rock power trio in history. Part of their performance can be seen by visiting this link on YouTube.

January 7-29, 2009 -- David's Solo show at Berkeley Gallery in the lobby of Berkeley College in Manhattan, 3 East 43rd Street ran through January 29th.

 This was the first of David's solo shows devoted exclusively to his new "pop" paintings based mostly upon musical themes.

The reception was held on January 13th, and a good number of people attended to see the new paintings, and the first series of color giclees of the images..

October - November, 2007-- David Tobey's painting Aboriginal Autumn, seen below left, was in an October and November group show with the Contemporary Artists Guild at the Gallery at The Offices of The Borough President of Manhattan, in the Municipal Building, in New York City.

     The Curvilinear painting to the right, entitled "Fish" by David's late father, Alton S. Tobey (1914-2005) was also shown in this exhibition.

    Although Alton Tobey was best known for his realist historical illustrations and murals, he was also a modern artist, who created hundreds of abstract paintings during the course of his career. September - November, 2007-- David's painting, "Reaching for The Cure" was created especially for the American Cancer Society and donated by him for a benefit art auction at the ACS's Evening of Jazz, held at Le Chateau restaurant in South Salem NY on Thursday, September 27th. A photo of David with the painting was featured in the November 2007 issue of Art Business News in their Picture Gallery.[see photo below left]. David's painting "Reaching for The Cure" was also selected by author Aaron Minsky for the cover of his book "Beyond Faith" [see photo below right], along with 12 of David's other paintings as illustrations in the book as chapter headings. More information on "Beyond Faith" can be found on this web page.

The same week as the opening of the Pleiades show, David donated a painting to Westchester's Danny Fund, an organization that provides financial, emotional and advocacy support for the families of children under the age of 21 who reside in Westchester and the Bronx, for their fund raiser Casino Night at the New York Athletic Club in Pelham on September 28th.

 

 


This Pleiades exhibition, which David titled "Driving Force" included many other paintings, prints of "Reaching for The Cure" and his welded steel sculptures, & ran through October 13th. The exhibition featured paintings in which he had taken a number of varied artistic approaches in terms of technique over the past few years, with subjects that concern him personally. His own artist's statement about this show can be read on his artist's statement page. The September 2007 issue of Art in America described the David's paintings in the Pleiades show as "Human drama, subconscious imagery, and a playful imagination, all coalesce in paintings and sculpture".

 At the September 29th reception there were refreshments and entertainment by keyboard artist Kirk Ehrenreich, who was a hit also at David's Westchester solo show reception at Cunningham Gallery in Hawthorne, NY in June '07, and who also entertained at Ms. Ellen Bradshaw's Pleiades opening receptions in '07.

June 19 - July 21, 2007 - -David's exhibition of paintings and sculpture at Cunningham Gallery in Hawthorne New York ran from its opening on June 19th through August 23rd. featured more than 30 of David's paintings and sculptures, along with two dozen new giclées of his paintings, created for this exhibition and and shown for the first time. The opening party was attended by over 300 people, featured entertainment by The Kirk Ehrenreich Duo, refreshments by Antonees Corporate Catering of White Plains, and a very enjoyable evening was had by all. Other sponsors of the event included law firms, a major bank and and other businesses in Westchester.

November 9, 2006 -- 200+ guests attended the reception for Tobey's one-man show at Pleiades Gallery in Chelsea at 530 West 25th Street for David's benefit exhibition for the National Scholastic Chess Foundation, that ran through November 25th. Some dozen paintings and sculptures were sold, including his Bishop Takes Rook, shown below on the poster for the show. 30% of all revenue from sales went to the NSCF.

Tobey's work in the show was reviewed by Cornelia Seckel, Editor of Art Times, who described David's it as "mesmerizing -- so much movement and color". Ed McCormack, in his full page review of the show in Gallery & Studio magazine, wrote about Tobey's sculpture as "surpassing even that of [Julio] Gonzales," & his paintings as "continuing to evolve at a pace with his native talent".

         "Chess masters strategize to formulate a dynamic approach to the game while creating concealed patterns and relationships within. The painting 'Bishop Takes Rook' was created to emulate this model.

May, 2006 -- The Contemporary Artists Guild selected two of David Tobey's works of art to be included in their annual invitational group exhibition at New York's Broome Street Gallery -- his acrylic painting "Passage" and his welded metal sculpture "Conductor".

Founded in 1968, The CAG is a group of carefully selected painters, sculptors and graphic artists, well known here and internationally. Their individuality of style, diversity of medium and fine workmanship can be seen in museums, galleries, publications and private collections.

February 12 - March 13, 2005 -- David studied violin in his early years at The Music Conservatory of Westchester in White Plains. Following a month-long solo exhibition of his paintings at the Virginia & Leonard Marx Gallery there, David's painting Exhuberance that was in the show was chosen for the cover of the Conservatory's 75th Anniversary program for it's student concert at Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center; where David also conducted parts of the orchestral performances.
